A new project OPES started this year was investigating the water quality
in our community. After learning a little about water contaminants,
the Environmental Club took an after school field trip to the ASC
Greenway in Fort Mill. We split into two groups to conduct a variety of
tests on Lake Haigler and Steele Creek. Our students reported those
findings globally to participate in the World Water Monitoring
Challenge! We also talked about ways to reduce pollutants and
contaminants in our water systems.
Additionally, students were taught a
lesson from the Action for a Cleaner Tomorrow workbook called “Oil and
Water”. Students were able to see how even small amounts of oil can
have harmful effects on the environment. Students created a video to promote DHEC’s “You Dump It, You Drink It” campaign that encourages proper disposal of used motor oil.
