Green Steps 2016

Schoolyard Garden

The Green Team has continued our efforts to put together a schoolyard habitat!  Students have taken a consistent, active part in weeding, putting in new plants, and even watering.  We have even had donations of transplants from parents and staff members, making the work we are doing that much more meaningful and personal.  One of the new additions was a Carolina Wren birdhouse (made from reclaimed wood, of course!).  We were elated that a family of Eastern Bluebirds decided to call it home!  Students have been able to watch the mom and dad take turns feeding their brood.  We even consulted with the South Carolina Bluebird Society to ensure their safe transition into the world and how we can attract another family!

First grade, with the help of Barbara O’Connell from the York County Soil & Water Conservation District, was able to continue with their gardening program again this year.  Students and volunteers were able to harvest another beautiful crop and enjoy a tasty home-grown salad!

This summer plans are in the works to install a gravel path and a rain barrel/water collection system.  A Boy Scout has offered to take this job on to help our garden grow!
