Frequently Asked Questions

What are the school hours?
Students should arrive no earlier than 7:05 am and no later than 7:35 am. School starts at 7:35 AM. Students should be in the classroom and ready to learn at that time. Parents are asked to walk their child in to school to sign them in if arriving after 7:35 as the student will be marked tardy at that time.

Student dismissal is at 2:00 pm each day. Students can walk home, can be picked up in the car rider line, ride the bus, or attend after-school child care (registration required). Please refrain from picking up your child early so instruction will not be disrupted. Early dismissal must occur before 1:45pm.

What is the average class size at OPES?
The average class size is approximately 18-24 students.

Are school lunches provided?
During the 2021-2022 school year, all students will receive free breakfast and lunch at school. However, students may purchase additional items from the cafeteria if preordered each morning.

Do students get recess each day?
Students receive 150 minutes of physical activity each week. Students attend recess daily and attend physical education class once in a five day rotation.

Can I visit my child during the school day?
Family members can NO LONGER visit their child during lunch or any other times of the day due to safety and confidentiality matters.

How can parents be involved at OPES?
Parents and family members are encouraged to volunteer and serve at Orchard Park. All volunteers will need to complete a background check. If you would like to be a volunteer, speak with your child’s teacher. Parents are also invited to participate in our active PTO. More information about the PTO can be found on the school website.

If my child is sick, can I pick up his/her homework?
If you would like to pick up homework for your child, please contact your child's teacher. The teacher will have your child’s work ready for pick up in the office in the afternoon.

Can I send medication to school with my child?
We have a full-time school nurse who can administer all prescription and over the counter medications to a child. For over-the-counter medications, parents must fill out a form in the office authorizing the administering of the medication. If the medication is a prescription drug, the form must be signed by the doctor. Please deliver all medications to the nurse; do not deliver them with a student.
