Green Steps Project: Recycled Art

Recycled Art is a new Green Steps Project this year.  We created many different works of art using a variety of recycled materials and media (paint, sculpture, fabric, drawing, etc.).

Some examples are:
• decorating used shoes to promote walking to school
• discarded paint at the York County Recycling Center at Baxter was picked up and used to paint the rock for Talons to the Turf,
International Walk to School Day (we love free!)
• glass jars were decoupaged and turned into spooky candle holders for Halloween
• fabric scraps were tied to a wire frame to create a heart wreath
• bottle caps were used to symbolize rain and make caterpillar art
• metal bottle caps were turned into snowman ornaments

We love this project for many reasons as it gives students the opportunity to think outside the box, create new meaning, demonstrate their individuality, and put recycling/reusing into practice!  Our Green Steps Art Mentor even came at the beginning of the year and conducted mini-workshops with teachers to encourage recycled art in each classroom.  After state testing is complete, older students will be holding a Recycled Art Workshop for the younger students!  We will be sure to share pictures!
