Green Steps Project: B2 Breathe Better

Another on-going project at OPES is the B2 (Breathe Better) program, an anti-idling/clean air campaign. The goal of B2 is to help protect the health and safety of children by reducing harmful vehicle emissions around school campuses. We have B2 signs displayed in the front parking lot and the back loop to remind drivers to shut off their engines. Our Environmental Club students collected data on the number of idling cars and buses in September, January, and in May. There was an 11% reduction in the number of cars idling between September and January. In May, students passed out brochures to parents in the car rider line to remind them to “turn the key and be idle-fee.”

Another strategy we used to promote alternate ways to school was having a “Walking School Bus." The Environmental Club painted our school rock to promote our “Talons to the Turf” International Walk to School Day event. Students met teachers at two separate locations and walked with students and parents to school. It was a huge success with 70% of students participating on our first event held in October. For our second event, held in March, Carolinas Medical Center partnered with and they passed out over 400 lunch boxes to students as they arrived at school. We appreciate their help in promoting healthy choices!
