Green Steps Project: Schoolyard Garden

Orchard Park Elementary is working toward a school garden that is a healthy habitat where native flora and fauna thrive. The short-term goal of the project is to revitalize an area on the school grounds by creating a South Carolina inspired garden.  By using Xeriscaping methods, the garden will be both purposeful in its function and design.  For example, native plants will be chosen and thoughtfully planted based on the climate of the Piedmont region in which we live.  These techniques, along with several others, will help with water conservation and reduce energy costs. The long-term goal is to have the garden certified as a Schoolyard Habitat.  The vision for the future is to have a hands-on, working garden where students, staff, and parents come together to maintain the space, conduct experiments, and growth along with the garden.  This garden will influence our school environment by creating a sense of community and will serve as model of sustainability for our students and the community for years to come.
